What I Learned as an SEO Intern

Table of Contents

By Skye Sonnega

Growing up with two teachers as parents, I have been reading, writing, and journaling ever since I was little. Before this year, I thought this would always be nothing more than a hobby. When I learned about SEO, I knew that I was completely wrong.

As I started my senior year of college in the midst of a global pandemic, I was overwhelmed and intimidated by the looming “unknown” ahead of me. I came into college not knowing entirely what I wanted to major in, but I knew I wanted to do something that combined my creative passions with my analytical side. After choosing Economics as my major, I took a few influential marketing classes that helped me realize I might be able to combine my wide variety interests into a professional career. It wasn’t until I dipped my toes into the world of SEO that I knew digital marketing was definitely something I wanted to pursue further.

Connecting with Uproer this past winter was a turning point in my year. After a few phone calls with Uproer team members, I realized that combining my passions for creativity and marketing into a career was feasible. The looming unknown didn’t seem as daunting anymore as I began researching what it meant to be an SEO Analyst. When I began my internship with Uproer in April, it just felt right.

Over the past two months my interest for SEO has only grown stronger as I’ve had the opportunity to work with one of the most knowledgeable and kind groups of people I’ve ever met. One of my favorite parts of this internship was the variety of clients I was able to complete projects for. As someone who is curious about everything, being able to write about industries I had never read about was fascinating. As I completed monthly reports for clients, I realized why I was so drawn to SEO: it’s so satisfying to see the implementation of an SEO strategy succeed through numbers! After that realization, I was hooked.

If I could give out one piece of advice to anyone interested in SEO, I would tell them to stay curious. The world of SEO and digital marketing is constantly changing at an incredibly rapid pace, and it’s up to you to stay updated on how you can change with it. It’s hard to define personal success, but during my time at Uproer I know that in this industry it can only be reached with a self-starter mindset, and the constant need to dig a little deeper on any statistic, trend, or figure.

The internet has been a great personal resource for me to stay up to date on what others are up to in the world of SEO. At the beginning of my internship I discovered the wide variety of newsletters, blogs, and sites that have overwhelming amounts of information and stories to share. My personal favorites are the Women in Tech SEO newsletter, the Learning SEO Roadmap Guide, #SEOForLunch newsletter, and Uproer’s Searchlite newsletter. I’m amazed by the strong sense of community that is constantly growing in SEO, and I’m excited to be a part of it!
