SEO Internship Reflection With Uproer

Table of Contents

by Jack Donahue, SEO Intern

SEO is something I’ve always known about, but I never viewed it as a true area of interest for myself. It always seemed very data-driven and involved a lot of numbers which is something I wanted to avoid. It wasn’t until I discovered this internship that I decided I would give it a second shot.

Throughout my time in college, I knew that marketing was the route for me, but I wasn’t sure about what area of it I wanted to get into. Most of the classes I took were a general overview of different sectors of it or just a general overview of marketing itself. It made it difficult to know what I truly wanted to do for a living. I started to do research online and even took a LinkedIn learning pathway course set focused on digital marketing. A lot of it once again was a general overview just like my classes, but there was one thing that stuck out and that was SEO. As I said earlier, this was something I already knew about, but I didn’t know a lot about it. This SEO course in LinkedIn intrigued my interest and I wanted to learn more about it and even get experience in it.

The next thing I did was take on a freelance digital marketing role at a local fencing company. With them, I conducted local SEO work to improve their local search ranking and drive in more business. After I started doing the work, I found it difficult and frustrating with the resources and tools I had access to. In the midst of this, I was searching for new jobs and opportunities and I arrived upon this position as an intern at Uproer. I began reading the description and saw SEO and immediately wanted to close the window and shut off my computer. But something held me back from doing that and I decided to continue reading the job description. The more I read the description the more my mindset changed around SEO and I decided I would give it a second shot. Once I decided that, I filled out the application and hit the apply button.

Shortly after applying, Dave reached out to me and wanted to have a conversation. After my first conversation, I knew I wanted to work at Uproer. It seemed like a really cool, young and up and coming company that was a fun and flexible environment. I finally found a position and company that felt real, natural, and not fake or robotic for once. A month went by and Dave got back to me and told me I got the position. I was more than excited, immediately accepted the position, and couldn’t wait for the opportunity to start working.

March had arrived and the internship had started. I began working on content outlines and doing keyword research then moved into doing content recommendations and updates. After some time with this, the other interns and I moved into getting experience with Paid Search. My favorite area had to be keyword research though because it was interesting to me to see what everybody else searched up to find different topics. Once I started putting together the lists I felt as if I were in the mind of consumers. Another thing I really enjoyed about this internship is that it allowed me to explore multiple industries. This is something you can’t get at most places and it’s something I really appreciated. I found out that I really enjoy doing work for audio companies which is an industry I never considered before this.

Outside of the work I did, it was great to work with everyone here at Uproer. I got to work with Skye, Kelsie, John, and Jess on multiple projects throughout my time here. It was always easy to reach out to them and receive feedback on work to see how I was doing. Although I did not get to work with Griffin and Dave a lot in my time here, they would offer their assistance whenever I reached out to them and were always nice and helpful. I appreciate everyone for everything in my time here and I look forward to staying connected with you all in the future. SEO is a big area of interest for me after this internship and it is an area of marketing I will continue to pursue.
