Before I started as a search engine optimization intern at Uproer I had no idea what SEO was! What I did know is that I have a passion for marketing and I was curious to learn more. It was a new world for me and I was ready to soak up information like a sponge! I’ll dive into the things I learned during my internship at Uproer, what I love about digital marketing and some of my favorite tools.
Things I Learned as an SEO Intern
An internship is a great learning experience for you to put your strengths and weaknesses to the test. You learn from your co-workers and they are learning from you during your time at a company. Working remotely as an SEO intern here are a few things I learned!
Everyone is learning with you
I learned that everyone is learning and growing working in SEO every day. New programs and updates are constantly being released to optimize content. There will be a learning curve to understanding the depth of programs and there’s nothing wrong with that! Everyone else is figuring it out with you and that’s something I appreciated at my internship.
You'll be exposed to different industries
During my time at Uproer I worked with five clients in industries from healthcare to clothing. I did a deep dive by researching different industries and learned things I would’ve never been exposed to. The beauty of an agency is that you’re learning a lot in a short period of time, improving your time management and organization skills all at once. I learned different audience’s needs, questions they had and provided them with answers. Target audiences ranged from children to boomers which was fun to work with.
SEO is an important tool
When I started my internship I learned quickly that many people don’t know what SEO or the value it can add to your brand. People often ask me what my job title is because they’ve never been exposed to it. I’ve become an advocate to spread the word and I believe more businesses need to utilize it. By investing and implementing SEO you will have a clear ROI and see results thanks to data and strategy.
The Beauty of Digital Marketing
I love that I got to get hands-on experience in digital marketing and feel like I’m making a real impact as an intern for the client. The beauty of digital marketing is small changes to the client’s website and creating new content will create more organic impressions and conversions. I felt like I was doing exactly that at my role at Uproer. Here are some things I learned about digital marketing!
It provides a new perspective
I love that in digital marketing it provides an opportunity to put yourself in other people’s shoes for a period of time. Thanks to research and analytic tools available I was able to understand a group of people better. Moreover, I was able to solve a problem for them. Whether it was answering a question in a blog or researching what people are searching on Google I’m helping make information more accessible for the potential customer and client.
You can wear different hats
During my internship I was able to experience in a variety of different areas to build my SEO experience. Some of the tasks I did included: research with the help of some great SEO tools, working on making updates to the client's titles and meta description, writing blog posts, and paid search campaigns! I was able to wear different hats in my role and worked with five clients during the last two months. I’m thankful I was exposed to so much during a short amount of time.
My Favorite SEO Tools
SEO tools are great to dive into data and analytics. The information you are providing to the client is updated information that will help create more traction. I’ve listed a few of my favorite programs to use.
SEO Minion
SEO Minion is a great extension tool to double check work and understand the competition. I liked to use it to gauge the average length of an article from the competition. When I updated title pages and meta descriptions it was a great way to see if it was updated. It’s easy to use and a tool everyone should use, especially if you write blogs.
Ahrefs
Ahrefs is an SEO analysis and backlinks tool. I liked to use it for keyword research and have a long list of keywords that would be useful to the client. The data was laid out in a clear way to learn what people are looking up and asking questions about.
Keywords Everywhere
This is another extension tool you can add with a free and paid version. Keywords Everywhere is great for keyword research and see what the monthly volume is, CPC, CMP and trends in past months. It’s a great SEO tool to understand the market on a subject matter and find a lower CPC with a high volume.
I’ve had a great experience during my time at Uproer. I learned a lot during my time at the agency and was able to get experience with several programs. I was introduced to the world of SEO and the importance of it for business today. I’m thankful for my kind co-workers and the help they’ve given me during my time here.
